Slow Food Youth activist Zayaan Khan from South Africa just came to visit our field in Berlin. She came by to learn more about how the project of the 2000m² global field is put into practice.

In her home country, Zayaan advocates a rural development that benefits poor people, and she fights for food sovereignty – particularly for the disadvantaged ethnic groups in South Africa. Moreover, Zayaan does not only speak in support of these ideas but she also operates an Urban Gardening project near Cape Town. During Zayaan’s tour of Germany she had a public debate with Agriculture Minister Christian Meyer in Oldenburg on sustainable food systems.

Together with activists from Slow Food Germany, Zayaan explored our field in Berlin in bright sunshine. We talked about the differences in soil fertility in South Africa and Germany and the importance of food sovereignty in both countries. Zayaan was especially surprised at how large 2000 m² of arable land really are, the area on which everything has to grow that we consume. She will take our field work program for schoolchildren – plowing, sowing and harvesting together – as an inspiration for her project in Cape Town. Also, she intends to measure her urban garden in Cape Town to check if it’s big enough for a 2000m² field. Who knows… this might be the beginning of the first 2000m² field in South Africa. We’ll stay on it, for sure!
