Exchange One: How do we experience climate change?

Wednesday, 2nd of December 01:00PM Germany // 03:00PM Kenya

More than 70% of Kenyan people derive their livery food from small-scale farming activities. On the other hand there is a rising awareness in Germany, where and how food gets produced. According to the idea of the global field, each global citizen has 2000m2: Everything that Mother Earth gives you must grow on this piece of land.

Global climate change affects us all -how? That differs from country to country. Therefore we want to host a place where people could discuss how climate change affects their situation/lives. Consumers are also co-producers; they influence both the kind and amount of production as well as the way it is produced. A conversation between the farmers, gardeners, co-producers and young people can present exciting insights for knowledge and experience sharing. We all have a role to play in preserving our planet either through production or through our food choices.

We connect small-scale farmers, food producers and consumers from Kenya and Germany. Join us and be a part of our global exchange and transfer of knowledge.

We are going to bridge distance via this exchange. How do we experience climate change? This is the question we want to ask our guests. You will get insights into different perspectives from all over the globe. Pests appear in new places, flooding and droughts are becoming more frequent. What is the answer to difficulties caused by climate change? Are there any new opportunities arising? We will ask farming experts in Kenya and Germany how they are facing climate change and its effects.

What we offer:

  • Local experiences and insights about the changing climate
  • Exchanging ideas and knowledge through international community
  • Engaging with other global citizens

Contents and Panel:

Hunger and Malnutrition as a result of climate Change

Climate change has increased undernutrition through food insecurity from extreme weather changes, droughts and shifts in agriculture. This has resulted in low yields in farmers fields hence most families go hungry without meals and even those who manage to have are nutritionally insecure. Impacts have gone to adverse levels as some have lost their lives and some families end up separating through divorce.

What’s changing at the german 2000m2 field?

Ekke

Ekke, our gardener who tends our 2000m2 field in Berlin-Pankow, will tell us to what extent the conditions for growing different crops have changed in recent years. What is changing? What will be different? And how will things go on in the field in the future? He will explain to us what is important in agriculture in the Berlin region.

Tribal clashes as a result of climate change

John Wainaina Macharia

We are going to see how two tribal conflicts due to change in climate where pastoralists and farmers have been affected differently thus increase in conflict. For farmers in Gilgil areas that used to be grazing land and used to receive less rainfall have become arable due to climate change as rainfall level is increasing. As a result there is conflict and farmers are losing their lives and several injured.
