Global Field Ukranenland

The Global Field Ukranenland is the latest project of the Historische Werkstätten Ukranenland e.V. and started its first season in 2023. The main focus here is on imparting knowledge to school classes, highlighting the problems caused by modern agriculture on the one hand and alternative options on the other.

The Global Field Ukranenland can be seen from the air. A river can be seen at the top of the picture and a stream at the bottom, with Global Field stretching between them alongside a path.

The Global Field is located between the Uecker and the drainage ditch running parallel to the Uecker. This offers endless possibilities, but also some difficulties. For example, there is enough water available for watering even in the dry spring, but in particularly rainy periods or when the beavers are bored again, the masses of water can sometimes become a problem. Due to the natural environment and the efforts of the Global Field team to work with nature rather than against it, there are many useful helpers on the site, e.g. various toads, frogs, slow worms, grass snakes, ground beetles, various birds, spiders etc.

If a little mouse comes to nibble, it’s no big deal; the beaver’s hunger is more likely to cause problems. Red deer behave particularly inconspicuously when they visit the fields and rarely leave any tracks at all.

Due to these near-natural conditions, you will only occasionally see a bed in pure cultivation at Global Field Ukranenland. Some of the mixed cultures consist of food plants for humans, but on the other hand plants such as nasturtiums sprout here as victims for aphids or marigolds against wireworms, for example. In addition, nettles, thistles etc. can also be left on Global Field to combat insect mortality.

In the summer of 2023, the shelters were built so that the school classes could work in the rain and when the sun was too strong. The following year, together with the Albert Einstein Regional School, we succeeded in setting up a school gardening club for the 5th and 6th grades. The school garden is located in the educational area of Global Field Ukranenland and has been in its second season since the beginning of March. At the end of the season, the children harvest everything in one day and cook delicious meals with everyone.
